All by myself….

Posted by Giuli on October 9, 2009

Jack loves to sing… He sings heaps in the day, from nursery rhymes to current songs, the song of the moment is “Boom Boom Pow” by the Black Eyed Peas – he even makes up songs, the current fave as we are trying to toilet train is pretty much centered around Poo and Wee…. Coffee is for Big Boys

Posted by Jarrod on October 6, 2009

On the weekend we went into the city for a look around and also to visit the Aquarium which by the way was a great experience (aside from spending time confined to small spaces with stinky people). Jack has reached the age where independence is paramount and that means “I walk, I walk” meaning he wants to run everywhere. It was quite manageable though with the previously mentioned confined spaces of the Aquarium.

We parked the car at the casino nearby and after the Fishies has lost their appeal we waddled out way back over the bridge with plans to grab a quick snack before heading home. Giuli and I bought a nice pack of Hand Rolls and whilst waiting to receive our bounty of seaweed wrapped rice and other mysterious ingredients Jack spotted a Coffee shop. “Coffee! I have it?”.When asked why he wants a coffee he gave us one of those answers you just cant argue with, “Coffee is for big boys”. Giuli and I exchanged one of those looks where we try not to laugh, you know the one that shows implicit approval. Instead of arguing about it we decided to pull a shifty on Jack so we went over and quietly asked for a hot chocolate.

A trip with the fishies

Jack looking at the Penguins

Yesterday we took Jack and Henry to the aquarium – Jack had visited previously about 18 months ago but couldn’t remember anything about it, which is understandable at his age.

Jack like most 2 year olds is obsessed with animals, he has an octopus that he plays with in the bath called “soggy”, a seahorse that he sleeps with (it has a glowing body) aptly named “Glowy” and he is obsessed with the movie Finding Nemo.  So that he understood where we were going , we told Jack that he would be visiting Soggy’s cousin, Glowy’s brother, Nemo and Uncle Ray (the sting ray) – so he was suitably excited about our day out.

Bob’s can fix it

Posted by Giuli on October 1, 2009

Like most 2 year old boys Jack is currently captivated by the cartoon “Bob the builder”.  Actually I wouldn’t say that he is captivated by the cartoon, as he really doesn’t watch it, more to the theme song, “Bob the Builder, can we fix it, Bob the Builder YES WE CAN!”

A poopy problem…

Posted by Giuli on September 26, 2009

So, most men would say that women take forever to get ready and leave the house… well, I wouldn’t say that I am one of those women, and I think Jarrod would agree.  I have always prided myself on the fact that I can be ready to leave to go anywhere at anytime.

Well, how things have changed!! Mothers would know that getting a baby, let alone two children out of the house is a feat of skill and timing, planned around feeds and sleep times.  At the moment leaving the house on time is nearly impossible, mainly due to baby boy Henry who I have kindly named “Mr Poopy Pants”!

Hand Eye coordination

Posted by Jarrod on September 23, 2009

Jack’s throwing skills are developing in step with Henry’s ability to deal with tactical strikes. As a secondary skill Jack is enhancing is ability to negotiate his way out of trouble using not so subtle accusations. When Jack has one of his enthusiastic outbursts of physical activity someone is usually but unintentionally put on the wrong end of a flying object. To more specifically define the term “someone” I mean Henry or myself.

Two incidents have occurred just recently. Firstly, Jack throws a collection of books into the air. A nice little 5 part series on something cutsie. Like a behind the head basket ball shot Jack sends the books in a nice clean arc over my head an BAM! staight into Henry’s forehead. For the next couple of days Henry sporting a nice set of scratches on the forehead. I mean these scratches were a perfect imprint of the books pages. You could not get any more book like if you drew the scratches on with a Smiggles art pen.

The next week Jack gets a soft foamy squishy ball and spotting an open catcher down field he winds the arm back puts some heat on that thing and sends it! Well I’m sure that is how it played out in Jack head. What actually happened was that Jack stood about 2 meters from Giuli and threw a ball right at her thinking she would catch it. Unfortunately Jack over invested in stocks for Giuli’s athletic abilities and the ball nailed Henry right in the back of the head, no harm no foul. To save face in this little incident Jack rightly pointed out to Giuli “But you missed it!”. It don’t pay to be a bystander when Jack is dabbling in Balls sports.

A name for everything

Posted by Jarrod on September 21, 2009

Jack’s imagination has really come in now. Fueled by cartoons and books his mental Rolodex of imaginary characters is quite impressive for a 3 year old. In any one day I can be a Piggy from Three little Piggies, if Jack is in a dark mood I can even be the Bad Wolf. I’ve also been a Dragon accompanied by Baby Dragon (this part is played by Henry). If trademarked characters are your thing Jack has those covered and has made me be Diego The Animal Rescuer and at times a random characters from Wow Wow Wubzy.

Names arent just something Jack ascribes to other people and things Jack has also named his feet. Jiggy and Joggy. Not sure which one is which but I guess it dosnt matter. He also sports a pair of Super cool “Action Fingers”, not quite sure the origins of this one. At a moments notice those guys can be out building and jumping towers, gouging deep fissures in my forehead when Jack attacks unprovoked. Man those “Action Fingers” can take a good chunk of skin off.

The only time me and Giuli are allowed to be known by anything that resembles our identities is when Jack introduces us to visitors entering our House. Upon entering we are ceremoniously introduced to the visitors as “here is My friend Mommy and here is My friend Daddy”. Introductions are accompanied by elegant arm waving gestures reminiscent of a game show host showing of a grand prize.

For the moment though its kind of cool to be called these names as I know in years to come the names will slowly become decidedly unsavory.

Spidey Cup Cakes

Jack's spiderman cup cakes

At my birthday, being 9 months pregnant my wonderful sister came over and made me a great dinner.  Once I had blown out the birthday cake that she made, and Chiara my neice and Jack had also had a turn at blowing out the candles, discussion was brought to Chiara’s birthday party the following weekend.  For each of her birthdays I have always made her special cupcakes, and she has been able to choose, I have made frogs, lady bugs and butterflies, so I asked her what would she like this year, as it was a “fairy party” she asked for fairies.  Jack, not wanting to miss out on the conversation (and even though his birthday was 3 and half months later ) told me that he wanted Spiderman cupcakes.   Being a 2 year old I thought that he would forget about the conversation.

Stop biting nails

Posted by Jarrod on August 30, 2009

When you are a pending parent for the first time you are told of all the things that you will have to go without, late nights out drinking, extra cash for spending on useless gadgets, time to yourself, playing online games like World of Warcraft and a car interior that isn’t covered in crap. Most of it scared the living hell out of me!

Needless to say all the anxiety experienced prior to the birth quickly melted away when I saw Jack pop out. In fact some of the stories were true and somethings I loved did actually fade away. But unlike the horror stories there was no feeling of regret, quite the contrary I was happy for these things to go away. However the biggest personal change that I went through I was extremely happy to go through.

Breast feeding in public

Posted by Giuli on August 29, 2009

Those who have given birth will understand my current obsession with “boobs”, “breast feeding” and “breast pumping” !  My day currently consists of breast feeding, pumping and all sorts of manhandling of my breasts…  I don’t think there is 5 minutes within the day that I don’t think about, talk about or display my boobs.. (proof -  in one paragraph I have mentioned boobs/breasts 4 times! hmm to further prove my obsession I am currently using a electric breast pump in one hand while typing with the other.. Seriously!). For anyone slightly interested its one of the Medela breast pumps, the Medela Swing.

5 weeks ago we welcomed our baby son Henry.  Most mornings when I was in hospital Jarrod would bring Jack in so that we could have some family time before any other visitors came.  On one particular morning, Jack and Jarrod came into my room while a midwife was helping me get my milk production going – and what I mean when I talk about the nurse helping me with breast milk production is that she was helping me manually express my colostrum (for those who have not had the pleasure in  experiencing it – she was squeezing the shit out of my nipple)
